Toyota’s pain, rival’s gain
In a few short weeks, Toyota has done what General Motors, For and other carmakers has failed to accomplish for decades. Erase the perception that the Japanese automaker’s cars are of much higher quality than those of its rivals.
A series of recent safety recalls- Now totaling more than 8.5 million vehicles worldwide has cracked Toyota’s bulletproof reputation and given rivals an opportunity to capture some of its customers.
Toyota stumbled as industry sales are just starting to climb after the worst slump in 30 years. It’s not yet clear which automakers will benefit most, but several stand to benefit and are wooing Toyota drivers with new ads and incentives.
Nearly half of the buyers who have defected from Toyota say they may never consider the brand again. Ford, Chevrolet , Hyundai and Honda have made the biggest gains with those customers. Sixteen per cent of new car buyers said they weren’t considering Ford before the recall, but are now.

New Subaru for 2010 – Tribeca
The Subaru Tribeca crossover SUV enters the 2010 model year with significant upgrades and an enticing new model. Changes include a model realignment, color revisions, and available Bluetooth®1 and XM® Satellite Radio.
Tribeca models have been realigned in order to simplify product choices. There are three Tribeca models — Premium, Limited, and Touring — and each of them has seven seating positions.
The new Tribeca Touring model has a sporty appearance. Highlights that differentiate it from Premium and Limited models include these standard features:
- Monotone exterior paint
- High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights
- Undercover for the front bumper
- Silver roof rails
- Power moonroof
- 18-inch silver-painted alloy wheels
- Auto-dimming rearview mirror with backup camera and 3.5-inch LCD display
Exterior color selections for Tribeca have been revised for the 2010 model year. Additional colors include Azurite Blue Pearl, Sky Blue Metallic, Graphite Gray Metallic, Steel Silver Metallic, and Crystal Black Silica. Deep Bronze Metallic, Ruby Red Pearl, and Satin White Pearl remain from 2009.
In addition, Tribeca exteriors receive a “Symmetrical AWD” badge located below the “Subaru” badge on the rear liftgate.
Interior highlights include dual-zone automatic climate control, available 385-watt 10-speaker harman/kardon®3 premium audio system, and available Navigation and DVD Entertainment Package.
The standard harman/kardon system in Tribeca Limited and Touring models consists of speakers in the upper and lower front doors, rear doors, and instrument panel; a seven-channel amplifier and equalizer; subwoofer; and digital signal processing.
Tribeca Limited and Touring models also offer the BlueConnect® Hands-Free Bluetooth phone capability and an XM Satellite Radio receiver and antenna.
At the heart of every Tribeca are features and systems synonymous with Subaru. Among them are Subaru Symmetrical AWD and a SUBARU BOXER engine.
The Tribeca AWD system has a balanced drivetrain that powers all four wheels for added traction. It provides exceptional control and handling.
The six-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine’s layout and positioning contribute to a lower center of gravity, which enhances handling. Low engine positioning and engine-mount design add to passenger safety.
Another Subaru strength is versatility, and Tribeca is perhaps the most versatile model of them all. Its second row has 40/20/40 seatbacks, and the third row features 50/50 flat-folding seatbacks. With the second- and third-row seatbacks folded down, maximum cargo space is 74.4 cubic feet.

Suzuki and Volkswagen becomes partnership.
Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft and Suzuki Motor Corporation have reached a common understanding to establish a close long-term strategic partnership. A framework agreement has been signed by representatives of both companies today.
In terms of global presence and product diversity, the partnership marks an important step towards the future for both Volkswagen and Suzuki. In terms of product portfolio, global distribution and manufacturing capacities, Volkswagen and Suzuki ideally complement each other. The companies plan a joint approach to the growing worldwide demand for more environmentally friendly vehicles. The management of Volkswagen and Suzuki have concluded that the complementary strengths of each company make for a perfect fit in exploiting their respective advantages as well as rising to the challenge of the global market.
In the automotive industry, where globalization and diversification proceed in parallel, both companies will establish a cooperative relationship while respecting each other’s independence as a stand-alone entity. Both parties are focused on achieving synergies in the areas of rapidly growing emerging markets as well as in the development and manufacturing of innovative and environmentally friendly compact cars.
To support a smooth development of this relationship, Volkswagen will purchase 19.9% of Suzuki’s issued shares. The Closing of the transaction is subject to approval of the relevant authorities and is expected in January 2010. Suzuki intends to invest up to one half of the amount received from Volkswagen into shares of Volkswagen. Both companies will form a long-term strategic partnership based on this which will support their successful strategies in these challenging times.
As demand continues to rise for smaller cars and for powertrains with higher fuel efficiency and lower CO2 output, Volkswagen and Suzuki will offer a compelling solution for customers in emerging markets buying a car for the first time and also for customers in advanced economies seeking to lower their CO2 footprint while still enjoying the freedom of transport offered by an exciting range of cars.
